Celebrating Tradition and Taste: ICAR-CRRI Showcases Rice Diversity at Pakhala Parab 2026 ![]()
The grand celebration of Pakhala Parab 2026, organized by the Odisha Tourism Department at Panthanivas, Bhubaneswar during 19-20 March, brought together culture, science, and innovation on a vibrant platform.
ICAR–Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), Cuttack made a significant impact through its participation, highlighting the role of traditional foods in future nutrition and entrepreneurship. On the first day, Dr. G. A. K. Kumar, Director, ICAR–CRRI, delivered the keynote address on “Revitalizing Odia Culinary Heritage: From Pakhala Parab to Global Plates”, emphasizing the global relevance of traditional foods as functional and climate-resilient diets.
The CRRI stall attracted wide attention with its display of rich rice diversity and innovative value-added rice products. On the second day, a special highlight was the presentation of 15 varieties of Pakhala prepared from specialty rice, showcasing the scientific significance of rice diversity in traditional food systems.
The event achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fermented rice (Pakhala). A key highlight was the visit of Shri Mohan Majhi, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha, who interacted with the CRRI team and appreciated the institute’s efforts in promoting rice diversity, value addition, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Dr. Sutapa Sarkar and Dr. M. Sivashankari represented ICAR-CRRI at the event and actively engaged with visitors, explaining the nutritional and health benefits of rice-based traditional foods.
