Foundation Day Seminar Series on “5G Rice: Gene, Genome, Green, Growth & Governance for Climate-Smart Agriculture”

The Foundation Day Seminar Series on the theme “5G Rice: Gene, Genome, Green, Growth & Governance for Climate-Smart Agriculture” was organized on the occasion of the 81st Foundation Day & Dhan Diwas of ICAR–CRRI, Cuttack on 22 April 2026.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Koushik Chakraborty, Organizing Secretary of the 81st Foundation Day, and Dr. Biswajit Mondal, Co-Chairman who highlighted the significance of the seminar themes in addressing emerging challenges in climate-smart agriculture.
The technical sessions featured distinguished speakers from premier institutions. Dr. M.K. Reddy, BRIC-NIPGR, New Delhi, delivered an insightful lecture under the theme Gene & Genome on the topic “Improving Rice Productivity through Targeted Genome Editing”, emphasizing the role of modern genomic tools in enhancing rice productivity and resilience.
Under the theme Green Technology, Dr. Somsubhra Chakraborty, IIT Kharagpur, delivered a lecture on “Agriculture 5.0: Sensors and AI for Advanced Soil Characterization”, highlighting the integration of sensors, artificial intelligence, and precision agriculture technologies for improved soil management and sustainable farming practices.
The theme Growth & Governance was addressed by Dr. A. Amarendra Reddy, ICAR-NIBSM, Raipur, who delivered a lecture on “Historical Evolution of Technology and Governance in Agriculture”, tracing the development of agricultural technologies and policy frameworks that have shaped modern agricultural systems.
Dr. Pratap Bhattacharyya, Director, ICAR-CRRI, Cuttack, delivered his remarks highlighting the relevance of 5G Rice in promoting sustainable and technology-driven agricultural transformation. He emphasized the importance of integrating gene, genome, green technologies, and governance approaches to ensure climate-resilient and future-ready rice production systems.
The speakers were formally introduced by Dr. Devanna, Dr. Dibyendu Chatterjee, and Dr. Sudipta Paul, who highlighted their professional achievements and contributions to their respective fields.
The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. M. Sivashankari, Organizing Secretary of the 81st Foundation Day, who expressed sincere gratitude to the distinguished speakers, organizers, participants, and supporting staff for their valuable contributions to the successful conduct of the seminar. The programme witnessed active participation from 109 participants, reflecting strong interest and engagement in the theme of climate-smart and technology-enabled agriculture.
