Stakeholder Workshop Highlights Gendered Insights on Rice Crop Loss Burden

The Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), in collaboration with the ICAR–Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), organized a one-day Stakeholder Workshop on Gendered Analysis of Rice Crop Loss Burden Stakeholder Dialogue & Learning Exchange for Collaborative Reflection on 26 September 2025 at ICAR-CRRI, Cuttack. This programme was part of CABI’s Global Burden of Crop Loss (GBCL) initiative, which seeks to generate robust, evidence-based insights into the scale and drivers of crop losses worldwide, and was funded by CABI, New Delhi. Altogether 75 participants comprising farmers and farmwomen from Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, and Kendrapada and representatives from ICAR-CRRI, other ICAR institutes, MSSRF, State Agriculture Departments, and KVKs attended the workshop. The inaugural session began with a welcome address and opening remarks by Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Investigator of the project. Dr. Kavita Mishra, Gender & Inclusion Expert, from CABI outlined the objectives of the workshop and introduced CABI’s activities, followed by an overview of the Global Burden of Crop Loss (GBCL) project presented by Dr. Arun Jadhav. Dr. Rahul Tripathi, Co-PI of this project highlighted the CRRI–CABI collaboration, while Dr. Sanghamitra Samantaray, Head of the Crop Improvement Division, and Dr. Pratap Bhattacharyya, Head of the Crop Production Division, shared their perspectives on the importance of the event. The presidential address was given by Dr. G.A.K. Kumar, Director, ICAR-CRRI, who interacted with farmers, encouraged them to freely share their problems related to crop loss in rice cultivation, and advised that collective efforts and active participation would help achieve the aim of the project. The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. A.K. Mukherjee, Co-Principal Investigator of the project. Following the inauguration, the programme included plenary presentations, brainstorming sessions, interactive discussions with farmers, and the sharing of personal experiences, before concluding with a closing session that summarized key insights and emphasized the importance of incorporating gender perspectives in understanding and addressing rice crop loss.
