CABI and CRRI launch collaborative project on gendered assessment of crop loss in rice ecosystems
Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), in collaboration with the Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI), has initiated a new project to conduct a gendered assessment of crop losses in rice ecosystems. The study forms part of CABI’s global initiative on the Burden of Crop Loss, which seeks to generate robust, evidence-based insights into the scale and drivers of crop losses worldwide.
Every year, up to 40% of crops are lost before they are even harvested. Crop loss impacts food security, farmer livelihoods and economic stability. However, the problem is poorly understood, preventing effective action to reduce losses. The Global Burden of Crop Loss initiative aims to bridge this knowledge gap by providing trusted, actionable estimates of crop losses to inform decisions on improving agricultural output and food security globally.
By integrating a gender lens, the project will highlight how crop losses affect men and women farmers differently, ensuring that interventions are more inclusive and equitable. Further, a two-day stakeholder workshop would be organized bringing together key stakeholders for fostering collaboration and dialogue to advance shared goals in agricultural resilience and innovation to develop a comprehensive case study.
This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to strengthening food security, improving resilience, and strengthening the rice farming system across Odisha. The project was launched on 15th September 2025 at CRRI campus in Cuttack.
