Training programme on Integrated pest management of rice for farmers of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada organized
The ICAR-Central rice Research Institute (ICAR-CRRI), Cuttack, organized a five-days training programme on “Integrated pest management of rice” from 18th to 22nd August, 2025 for the farmers of Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) scheme. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. G.A.K. Kumar, Director of the institute who encouraged the farmers to have a profit-based approach to farming and highlighted the role of FPO’s in boosting farmers income. Dr. Shyamaranjan Das Mohapatra, Head, Crop Protection Division, and Course Coordinator outlined the five days training course and the importance of pest management in rice for sustained economic growth and highlighted the benefits of CRRI developed Alternate Energy Light Trap (AELT), Solar 24 x 7 Insect Trap, Trichocard, pheromone traps, and ricexpert App. Dr. B Mondal, Chairman of the SCSP programme of CRRI gave an insight about the benefits available through the SCSP scheme and explained various activities undertaken by CRRI for upliftment of income of SC farmers. Dr. PC Jena, Nodal Officer, SCSP program encouraged the female farmers to form FPO’s for income generation under SCSP schemes. Dr. Rupak Jena, Scientist. (Nematology) and Course Co-coordinator of the training programme outlined the training objectives and various activities to be undertaken during the period. A total of 22 farmers attended the week-long training programme that focused on insect pest, disease and nematode management of rice through drone, hands-on-training in safe use of pesticides, eco-friendly pest management through biocontrol agents and visited the institutes Oryza museum, Pheromone production unit and CRRI Insectarium. The programme emphasized the drudgery reduction with modern and impactful farming practices that supplements productivity and income. A farmer participant Gopal Jena of Kendrapada district remarked “I got to know about various insects and pests of rice that were not known to me previously and now I am well equipped to identify diseases, insect and nematodes affecting paddy and also sustainable ways to manage them”. The farmer participants were given training certificate along with training materials and biofertilizers produced at the institute.
